*** Now talking in #qhsreunion

*** sumo (all@142.58.124.2) has joined #qhsreunion

<sumo>

hello

<Danimal>

sumo! I wasn’t expecting you!

<sumo>

well i wasn’t sure it would but it looks like mIRC is dealing with NT.

<sumo>

we decided not to go to the cottage yet – it’s pouring out.

<sumo>

so i JUST downloaded this stuff in the last 20 mins – ‘whew!

<Danimal>

Whats wrong with NT? You had problems with it in the past?

<sumo>

no problems, but how 16-bit friendly is NT!?

<Danimal>

That was a good FAST install!

<sumo>

happy easter, by the way!

<Danimal>

mIRC is available as both 16 & 32 bit versions–you grabbed the 16?

<Danimal>

I’m running 32bit under win32s on Win3.1!!!

<sumo>

i grabbed what i saw… i only saw one. (cnet – www2.axis.net was down)

<sumo>

ha ha ha we’re really out of sync aren’t we!!

<sumo>

oh well i wish i had a mac, anyhow! except i REALLY didn’t see a mac
version.

<Danimal>

Cnet usually points you at other sites, so I figured both would be
available, but it appears to work so thats whats important.

<sumo>

yes indeed. i was afraid it wasn’t working since i could see your name in
the list at the right, and could see my "hello", but nothing else.

<Danimal>

There is IRC software for Mac, but it’s named something unusual–I don’t
recall

<Danimal>

The only thing you usually see when you join a channel is anything that
happens AFTER you get there and the announcement of where you are

<sumo>

where i am ?

<sumo>

i didn’t get a chance to read (i skimmed) the README or FAQ, is there
anything i need to know?

<Danimal>

You are on #qhsreunion

<Danimal>

Probably nothing special in that you figured out enough to get it
operational

<sumo>

so do you use irc much ? i have used "talk" (unix!) with people
all over the place but it is NEVER this fast.

<Danimal>

Yes, I started with ‘talk’ too, but a few years ago a few friends got me
into trouble by getting me into chatting on BitNet

<Danimal>

I had this freshman at Clarkson I had never met wanting to marry me….

<sumo>

yikes! that’s part of what you meant by "getting you in trouble"?

<Danimal>

But, as a rule, I don’t ‘chat’ much!

<sumo>

yeah who has time ?

<Danimal>

Yes, that’s what I meant!

<sumo>

you know, i DID expect Chris to be on.

<Danimal>

Once in a while I will get on the #genealogy channel if I’m in the mood…

<Danimal>

Oh, I’m sure he will be here. This was HIS plan!

<sumo>

but did you make the channel ? or is it persistent once made ?

<Danimal>

I just got a note from Robin Stern, she’s having server problems and
doesn’t expect to make it.

<sumo>

bummer.

<Danimal>

No, whenever you type in a channel that doesn’t exist, you become the one
and only and have ‘ops’

<sumo>

i know Jo Griffith M. is cooking for easter – i am not sure she’ll get a
chance either. i hope so! they are on win 3.1 i think

<Danimal>

We have a fairly fast connection here!

<sumo>

unusally fast ?

<Danimal>

There is less than one second delay from me to you. That’s fast when I’m
use to long delays…

<sumo>

maybe it’s low traffic. i picked a newnet in washington, not far from
here, and we have

<sumo>

a stompin’ connection to there (from SFU)

<Danimal>

If you right click on my name and pick CTCP you can ping me

<sumo>

ok, i see. for a few secs (longer than transmission time!) i couldn’t
figure out what "pick CTCP" meant. found it by accident. i’m still
awkward on a PC.

<Danimal>

Use to those macs? or Suns?

<sumo>

1) Sun 2) mac 3) just about any unix 4) PCs aren’t even 4th on my list!

<Danimal>

I’m training on PC’s but if I get the job I’m up for at the university I
will be back using them all again. In cluding the two HP3000 mains I have to
babysit tomorrow.

<sumo>

good luck on the job hunt (assuming you really want the job!). what is it
- general tech support ?

<Danimal>

I have linux installed on this PC, but haven’t been using it much
recently. Still need to set up X-windows

<Danimal>

It’s basically level two helpdesk backup–I describe it as the consultant
to the user who wants to do more…

<sumo>

we have only win’95 on the laptop, NT on the desktop. we want to make at
least the desktop dual boot, but haven’t gotten around to it yet.

<Danimal>

What are you doing there at SFU?

<sumo>

we are using freebsd in our new networking II lab – i haven’t dealt with
it much yet.

<sumo>

i am a "systems consultant" – the last thing in my job
description is "and other related duties as necessary" :-)

<Danimal>

I’m planning on setting up dual boot the safe way, seperate partitions! i
would like to have both NT and Win95 to compare

<Danimal>

That other related duties will get you every time! ;

<sumo>

but i do web stuff for the school of computing science, and unix sys
admin (mostly above the network level)

<sumo>

i also do application level help for the admin staff – they went from mac
to PC last summer

<Danimal>

Our technical admin went for an interview at another university this week
and I haven’t heard how it went yet. If he leaves, we’ll be in hot water.

<sumo>

it isn’t that much different though – most packages look like other
packages of the same type (word proc, DB, whatever).

<Danimal>

Though it has been suggested I could take his position..I’m no tso sure!

<sumo>

if you get the job see if you can get them to send you on NT training.
it’s like gold plating your body parts in terms of upping your personal
value!

<sumo>

worth the excruciating experience . . . :-}

<Danimal>

I agree…You must think like me, I considered similar type apps the same
too

<sumo>

they are from OUR point of view! one thing i like a lot in this job is
the range of users – i get to help totally non-tech people (secretaries etc)
and total geeks (grad students). keeps me interested, and challenged. i love
the whole spectrum of users.

<Danimal>

Yes, I’ve been reading Microsft Certified Proffessional, and I’m planning
on going all the way eventually…

<sumo>

but the non-tech people NEED me so much more! i’m pretty good with them
(if i do say so myself).

<sumo>

you know mr. benton is almost 1/2 hour late isn’t he ?

<Danimal>

Yes, It is important to be a good ‘people’ person as well as technically
competant (sp?)

<sumo>

it’s actually KEY to be a good people person. but maybe half the sys
admins i know are. maybe.

<Danimal>

Yes, I hope everything is OK. I expected him to be here first!

<sumo>

maybe he can’t get connected to his ISP :-)

<sumo>

i did a "whois" on you and then on me.

<Danimal>

Yes, we just lost our primary Unix admin, though he left for a better
position closer to his family, he definitely was not a strong people person.
But he knew his Suns

<Danimal>

So who am i? I’ve always wanted to know…

<sumo>

there are 7 people in my group (2 "technicians"). as long as we
have some good people people we’re ok.

<sumo>

well you gave a "real" looking email address.

<sumo>

and it said something about "aohell"

<Danimal>

It is real…I don’t believe in faking it.

<Danimal>

Yes, the server I am attached to in FL is irc.aohell.org

<sumo>

i wasn’t sure how private the information is so i didn’t give a real one.
i put all@once, then added .com in case it check for real-looking email
addrs.

<sumo>

but then i whois’d myself and i guess there IS a once.com…. so i
ditched the .com

<Danimal>

actually what it checks is your assigned IP name

<Danimal>

But, mIRC has a built-in Ident server, so you can fake it into accepting
you almost nomatter what..

<Danimal>

But some servers are picky

*** Danimal sets mode: +s

<sumo>

ok, yes, it is giving my curent IPAddr – but that’s a temp, we get them
from a pool when we ppp in.

<sumo>

what is +s ?

*** Danimal changes topic to "Come one, come all to the Class of 1977"

<Danimal>

The +s is ‘secret’ so the channel name won’t show in the channel list.
Everyone we are expecting knows the channel name..I meant to do it earlier

<sumo>

Tor’s Barney tape just ended… i can’t stay on much longer.

<sumo>

:-)

<sumo>

we’d sort of forgotten Barney since Bria outgrew it. HE’S BACK ! (in our
house anyhow)

<Danimal>

Barney’s always there…I’ve been known to do a little directing during
the local pbs pledge drive.

<Danimal>

I learned that at QHS!!!

<sumo>

that’s cool of you!

<sumo>

we phone up and donate :-)

<Danimal>

I’ve been getting burned out recently though. Both at the tv station as
well as my other volunteer position as Docent for the TN aquarium

<sumo>

if we lived closer (walking distance or 10 min drive) to our aquarium i
think i’d volunteer there. but its 45 min…

<Danimal>

I love the environment, but the politics is what gets me down

<sumo>

with the kids i find though that we are rushing so much to get all over
the place. we try not to commit to too many things.

<Danimal>

We have lost several staff people over the past year that really made the
volunteer program worthwhile for me

<sumo>

wow that’s a profound statement – true of many things in life… the
politics are what spoil many an otherwise good environment.

<Danimal>

Well, you have kids…got an excuse for me?

*** sumo has quit IRC (irc.aohell.org irc.eskimo.com)
